What's new in clouds?

We're in the middle of the summer holidays, but our friends at Google Cloud and Oracle are not sleeping.

Google Cloud Platform introduces managed Kafka

Google promises to take Kafka Cluster management off of your to-do list. That’s good. We don’t have that many open-source managed solutions. They are proposing a solution to the traditional pub/sub approach. It provides generic interface, so usual libraries may connect to the cluster with no hassle. The pricing model is similar to that in BigQuery, we’re paying for slot-hours. Managed Kafka is available in selected regions.

Oracle on the other hand introduces Ampere A2

The new ARM-based VMs in the cloud. These are based on next-generation processors. Oracle states that it provides excellent price-for-performance. New instances provide up to 156 vCore/946 GB RAM and up to 24 network interfaces. The price is also very competitive: $0.014/OCPU/hour and $0.002/GB/hour. OCI states that they are up to 28% more performant than the previous generations. How’s the outcome? We’ll see, once more data arrives.

Is ARM64 the new AMD64? I hope these prices will increase the demand of green computing power.
